The use of artificial intelligence to reinvent the classic film “The Wizard of Oz” will probably see mixed fans reactions, experts at Fox News Digital said.
While “movie purists” can withstand the idea of using a generative AI to give classical films an entire youthful cure, technology could “breathe new life” into successful movies – including “The Wizard of Oz”.
Warner Bros. Discovery, Google Cloud and Magnopus have decided to do so by creating an immersive experience for fans of the 1939 classic. The new “Wizard of Oz” experience should be presented in the Las Vegas sphere on August 28.
“Fans’ reaction will probably be divided into two separate camps,” said Michael Walker, CEO of A-STIF in Trilogy, in Fox News Digital. “Film purists will oppose – and they have valid concerns about artistic integrity. The original work represents specific creative choices by directors, filmmakers and dryness designers that have worked in the constraints of their time. The enlargement and reinventuation of AI creates something fundamentally different from their vision.”

“On the other hand, this represents a new exciting way to connect classic films with an audience that expects more and more immersive experiences,” he said. “Technology could breathe new life into works that could otherwise disappear from cultural relevance.”
“The Wizard of Oz” was originally filmed in four by three images on a 35 mm film, but had to be transformed to adapt to the 160,000 square feet of Las Vegas Sphere.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?
“Using versions of Veo, Imagen and Gemini specially set for the task, the Google teams and their partners have developed a” super resolution “tool based on AI to transform these tiny celluloid frames of 1939 into images of ultra-utra-utra height definition which will appear inside the sphere”, according to a sphere ” Google blog Explain technology. “Then, the teams make an area of suspected AI, to extend the scope of the scenes to fill the space and fill the gaps created by the camera cups and the framework limitations. Finally, thanks to the performance generation, they incorporate composites of these famous performance in extended environments. Together, these techniques help to reach natural gestures, details and ends. correspond. “
Jim DOLAN, Executive President and Chief Executive Officer of Sphere Entertainment, said: “When you have an innovation like this, you do not always know where it will go. You must be able to do an act of faith. What you are going to see in the Wizard of Oz at Sphere ‘is clearly a jump of faith’ ‘.”

The reactions of fans to this jump “will extend to the spectrum”, Boon Chew, founder of Centaurlab.ai, told Fox News Digital: “Some will be excited, other resistance fighters. Predict the majority reaction is difficult, and in any case, popular opinion will not determine that something is just or significant. Innovation is not a democracy – it is a democracy.”
“What really matters is the result,” said Chew. “If a redesigned classic resonates, its value will speak of itself. Rejecting it without seeing the result is less a question of merit and more discomfort with change. A classic continues to be a classic because it is expressed in a new way. In fact, the heart of a classic is its ability to endure, evolve and inspire through generations. It is not your thing – but let others explore and create.
He continued: “From an evolutionary point of view, nothing should be frozen in time. Reimagine the classics with a generative AI opens new doors – for education, narration and accessibility.”

The MA’s makeover of “The Wizard of Oz” represents a “fascinating evolution in the way we preserve and reinvent cultural touch stones”.
“What is happening with ‘Wizard of Oz at Sphere’ is a total transformation of the visualization experience, extending beyond the original framework and creating a new visual content where it did not exist,” said Chew.
The founder of the artificial intelligence society said that creative intention and transparency imported the most into this new era of film technology.
“Is it presented as a new interpretation rather than a replacement? Does he respect the spirit of the original while creating something new? The most successful IA reimagins will be those who honor their source material while being honest on the transformative nature of the experience”, according to Chew.

Classic films with “strong visual signatures” would be good candidates for an AI remake, Walker told Fox News Digital. These films include “2001: A Space Odyssey” or “Lawrence of Arabia”.
Other films that could benefit from the transformation of AI would be silent features, black and white films and additional modern classics.
“Cloning the voice of AI can give voice to silent stars, while deep learning can restore or reconstruct missing images,” noted Chew. “Purists can resist – but the wider audience could find it fascinating.” For black and white films, “AI can color the scenes, the remaster audio and improve clarity – offering a new experience while preserving the soul of the original.”

Franchises such as “Star Wars” or “Blade Runner”, which already experience retouching, could also be good options.
“The AI can raise visual effects, insert characters in a transparent way or clone emblematic voices like that of Dark Vader,” said the IA expert. “Older fans can stick to the originals, but the new generations could prefer these high -tech interpretations.”
