Last year, Google won a major extension of its application library for Android Automotive, aimed at bringing more entertainment and utility to integrated Google cars. Now the technology giant has made this promise, announcement The deployment of dozens of new applications for vehicles running Android Automotive OS. From this week, drivers and passengers in supported cars will have access to a wider range of applications, but only when parked, of course.
Unlike Android Auto, which is based on a connected phone and is currently available in more than 200 million vehicles, Android Automotive natively operates on the car infotainment system. This means that applications are preloaded and that you do not need a phone to access Google services such as Google Maps or Google Assistant.
Until recently, the selection of applications on Android Automotive was limited, and there was not much incitement to developers to postpone their services. With this new program, however, Google breathes life in dashboards by adding a range of entertainment and news applications – Plex, F1 TV and NBC News among them – and a series of games like Roblox and Farm Heroes Saga.
Nicknamed the “mobile application program ready for the car”, the initiative consists in scanning the Google Play Store for applications that already work well on tablets and other large screens. If these applications are considered safe to use in a parked vehicle, Google will automatically distribute them on the Play Store found in cars running Android Automotive.
From this week, the drivers of Select Volvo and Polestar vehicles will be able to download many new titles From Google Play Store in their cars, with more brands and models to be added soon.
